CHAPTERS 4 & UNIT 3’S CHAPTER 5
DECLARING AND REMEMBERING OUR SALVATION:
TWO ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH: WATER BAPTISM &
COMMUNION
1. WATER BAPTISM
WATER BAPTISM AFTER CONVERSION (ACTS 2:3641; 16:3134;
22:1116).
WATER BAPTISM IS BY IMMERSION (ACTS 8:3539; ROMANS 6:1
4).
WATER BAPTISM IS IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND
THE HOLY
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JOHN’S, THE
BAPTIZER, PRACTICE OF WATER BAPTISM AND WHAT WE
PRACTICE TODAY?
WHY DID JESUS ‘HAVE TO BE’ BAPTIZED?
MATT 3: 13 17, “JESUS TOLD JOHN ...IT IS PROPER FOR
US TO DO THIS TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS.
RIGHTEOUSNESS IS MORE THAN AVOIDING SIN; IT IS AN
ACTIVE CONFORMITY TO EVERY DIVINE PURPOSE
PERHAPS A PREVIEW OF SUBSTITUTION: ONE WHO IS
SINLESS, BECAME SIN FOR US (II COR 5:21)
COMMUNION (THE LORD’S SUPPER)
PROCLAIMS THE LORD’S DEATH UNTIL HE COMES (1 COR 11:26)
TWO-PART FOCUS: MEMORIAL OF HIS SACRIFICE AND PROCLAMATION
OF HIS RETURN
WE PREPARE FOR COMMUNION BY SELF-EXAMINATION (1 COR 11:26
31)
FULFILLED AND REPLACED THE OLD TESTAMENT PASSOVER
(MATTHEW 26:1729; 1 COR 5:78)
TULIP:
CALVINISTS’
THEOLOGICAL
PERSPECTIVE
POPULAR BUT
DANGEROUS!
CALVINISM DENIES GOD CREATING MANKIND WITH THE ABILITY TO
CHOOSE TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.
THE TEXTBOOK POINTS OUT THAT THE SCRIPTURES STRESSED IN
BOTH CALVINISM AND ARMINIANISM ARE TRUE REGARDING
SALVATION.
BELIEVERS NEED ASSURANCE OF THEIR SALVATION AND NEED TO
KNOW THAT THEY ARE SECURE IN GOD’S LOVE. JESUS TOLD HIS
FOLLOWERS THAT NO ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO SNATCH THEM OUT
OF HIS HAND OR HIS FATHER’S HAND (JOHN 10:2829).
BUT THE BIBLE ALSO WARNS BELIEVERS AGAINST TREATING THIS
SALVATION LIGHTLY OR TURNING AWAY FROM GOD IN APOSTASY.
APOSTASY IS A DELIBERATE DENIAL OR ABANDONMENT OF AN
INDIVIDUAL’S FAITH. IT IS TURNING ONE’S BACK ON CHRIST AFTER
TASTING THE HEAVENLY GIFT (HEBREWS 6:46).
ARMINIANISM:
Conditional Election: God chooses people for salvation based on His
foreknowledge of their faith and obedience, not arbitrarily.
Unlimited Atonement: Jesus Christ died for every person, not just a
specific elect group, offering the opportunity for salvation to everyone.
Prevenient Grace (Need for Grace): While humans are sinful and
cannot initiate salvation alone, God provides enabling grace (prevenient
grace) that allows them to respond to the gospel.
Resistible Grace: God's grace, while necessary for salvation, is not
irresistible. Humans have the free will to accept or reject God's invitation.
Possibility of Falling from Grace: Believers can forfeit their salvation if
they stop believing and fail to remain in Christ through obedience.
A/G DOC ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
GOD MAKES PROVISION OF SALVATION FOR EVERY PERSON
SALVATION IS RECEIVED AND ASSURED BY FAITH
SALVATION IS AN ONGOING CONFLICT WITH TEMPTATION
AND SIN
SALVATION MAYBE FORFEITED OR ABANDONED BY REJECTING
CHRIST
The apostle Peter warned, “If they [new believers] have escaped the
corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and
are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end
than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not
to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then
to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them”
(2 Peter 2:2021).
The Bible surely warns against the possibility of forfeiting, or abandoning,
salvation, but it never ceases to offer hope for anyone who will respond
to the appeal of the Holy Spirit. We cannot be ‘backslidden Christians’
you are either backslidden or a Christian...Carnal = weak and struggling
believers/Christians.
From the A/G Position Papers: (ag.org)
Jesus stated, “Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The
apostle Paul, with great assurance, declared, “Everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
So Christians should never prematurely conclude that a
struggling brother or sister is irredeemable. If the father did
not give up on the lost son (Luke 15:1131), neither should
the Body of Jesus Christ.
UNIT 3
CHAPTER 5
THE PROMISE OF
THE HOLY SPIRIT
A LOOK AT THE ‘ONENESS/JESUS ONLY’
THEOLOGY:
THE TRIUNE NATURE OF GOD IS THOROUGHLY IMBEDDED IN
SCRIPTURE: GOD IS FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRITTHREE
DISTINCT PERSONS, YET ONE GOD. ANY OTHER
INTERPRETATION CHANGES THE NATURE OF GOD.
A NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES CLEARLY SUPPORT
THE CONCEPT OF THE TRINITY. SOME EXAMPLES INCLUDE
MATTHEW 28:1820; JOHN 14:1617, 2526; 1 CORINTHIANS
12:46; AND 2 CORINTHIANS 13:14.
IN ADDITION, JOHN 8:1718 CLEARLY ESTABLISHES JESUS
AND THE FATHER AS TWO DISTINCT WITNESSES,
DEMONSTRATING THAT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON.

ACTIVELY WORKS AND ‘MOVES’) IN TODAY’S
WORLD
